But Ruth said, "Do not urge me to leave you or turn back from following you; for where you go,
I will go, and where you lodge, I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God.

...
Thank you for your visit, and WELCOME!

This purpose of this site is to commemorate and share the remarkable faith journey of Rev. and Mrs. A. E. Hughes, the namesakes of the HUGHES CHAIR of CHRISTIAN MINISTRY and the HUGHES STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP at Oklahoma Baptist University, Shawnee, Oklahoma.  It will tell the story of  their faith journey and ministry and hopes to honor the memory of their devoted daughter, the late Mrs. Faye Hughes Van Sickle, (at right, as Miss  Faye Hughes, circa 1943 during her OBU years), whose gracious bequest from her estate to OKLAHOMA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY in June of 2010 has established the REV.  A. E. and DORA JOHNSON HUGHES CHAIR (for faculty) in OBU's SCHOOL OF CHRISTIAN SERVICE, as well as continued the HUGHES STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP.

This site is also to serve as an avenue of communication between the Hughes family and students and faculty of Oklahoma Baptist University who are the honorees/beneficiaries of Mrs. Van Sickle's gift.  The Hughes family would like to hear from those whose lives, ministries, families and career paths are and have been impacted by Faye's gift to Christian education.

The story of the faith journey of Rev. A.E. and Dora J. Hughes -- From the Prairie to the Pulpit  -- will be told here...and the contact and input from the beneficiaries of the Hughes Chair or Hughes Scholarship...will continue that story of faith and seeds planted.

At left:   Mr. R. W. "Wayne" Hughes,
in his Army Air Corp uniform circa 1942, about the same time as the photo of his sister, Faye Hughes Van Sickle, above.

Mr. Hughes is the only surviving child of Reverend and Mrs. A. E. Hughes. Wayne and Faye's parents, Alter Eli and Dora.  They had two children who survived until adulthood, after losing one son in infancy.

Mr. Hughes and his wife of 65 years, Dorothy, for 55 years owned and operated Hughes Jewelry Store in Frederick, Oklahoma, where they still reside.

Both active and faithful members of First Baptist Church, Frederick, Oklahoma, their hard work and commitment made sure that two of their children attended OBU in the 1960's. Two of their grandchildren are also OBU graduates.

At the request of Major General Van Sickle, Mr. Hughes presented the gift from the estate of his  late sister at a family luncheon in June, 2010, at the home of Dr. and Mrs. David Whitlock, OBU President.
PLEASE VISIT US REGULARLY, as we continue to add to this inspiring story and to this journey of FAITH, FAMILY and abandoning all for the call...

Congratulations! to Dr. Scott Pace, of Oklahoma Baptist University.  On August 31, 2011 Dr. Pace was installed as the first professor to hold the REV. A.E. and DORA JOHNSON HUGHES CHAIR of CHRISTIAN MINISTRY.  The family of Faye Hughes Van Sickle and Reverend and Mrs. Hughes are proud of the selection of Dr. Pace, and look forward to his ongoing contributions to his students and to the advancement of the Gospel.

The fulfillment of  Mrs. Van Sickle's dream to honor her parents and further the kingdom of God is well on it's way. Her family is delighted that Dr. Pace will continue her goals and faithfulness.

A seed planted...in the hearts of students...can flourish and bloom in ways only God knows.  Reverend and Mrs. Hughes -- faithful, loving, hard-working, fun-loving people -- would have been thrilled and moved -- to see Dr. Pace's work continuing on in their names.

Chair of Christian Ministry
Oklahoma Baptist University -- August 31, 2011

At left, Reverend and Mrs. Alter Eli Hughes, A.E. and Dora -- outside their home, sometime in the 1940s.

Dora (Johnson) Hughes and Alter Hughes were childhood family friends near Olney, Texas. The two families had adjoining properties, and Alter and Dora grew up knowing each other.

Their congregations and friends and family remember them as down-to-earth, fun-loving, happy people -- who left the farm near Throckmorton, TX in the mid-1930's to follow the call of Christ.

A. E., a farmer and cowboy, then moved the family to Decatur, Texas, to attend Decatur Baptist College, to receive his ministerial education.

He later served as Pastor of churches in Chico, TX, Bryson, TX, Post Oak, TX, Corinth, TX, Chattanooga, OK, and
Lamesa, TX, among others.

Rev. Hughes died of complications following a heart attack in the late 1950's.  He was preaching a week of revival services at the time of his heart attack.
Major General Neil. D. and Mrs. Faye Hughes Van Sickle, in 2007, during a visit to a Hughes family member in Texas.

The Van Sickles were devoted to family, and Faye rarely missed a Hughes family celebration, regardless of distance.

Their love for others was also displayed during the many occasions when they graciously entertained family and friends
at their home in
Kalispell, Montana.

Both Major General Van Sickle and Mrs. Van Sickle were active, charitable and well-respected community members in the northwest Montana area, where General Van Sickle still resides and serves his community.
